Dr. Leopoldo Malvezzi is a pediatric surgeon at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. He received his medical degree cum laude at the medical school in Milan, Italy. This included three months of research at Washington University Medical School on pancreatic islet transplantation, the subject of his thesis. Dr. Malvezzi then transferred to New Jersey, where he obtained a research fellowship in vascular surgery at Morristown Memorial Hospital, where he also completed his general surgery residency as a Chief Resident. He then came to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, currently Nicklaus Children's Hospital, where he completed his pediatric surgery fellowship.
Dr. Malvezzi returned briefly to Italy and was successful in creating a pediatric surgery section at the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan.

Fuad Alkhoury, MD is part of the Department of Pediatric General & Thoracic Surgery at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. Dr. Alkhoury, obtained his medical degree from the University of Damascus School of Medicine, where he later completed an internship in general surgery. Anxious to pursue a course in postdoctoral surgical research, Dr. Alkhoury accepted a position at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He then went on to complete his general surgery residency at Hospital of Saint Raphael, Yale University School of Medicine. Upon completion, he accepted a position as a pediatric surgical fellow at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, then known as Miami Children’s Hospital, Florida International University School of Medicine.
Dr. Alkhoury is Board certified in General and Pediatric Surgery. He is a member of many professional societies and has authored many research articles and presented in national and international meetings. Although Dr. Alkhoury is well versed in all aspects of pediatric surgical care, he has a special interest in hepatobiliary and intra-thoracic pathology, neonatal and fetal medicine with focus on minimally invasive approach. In addition to the above, Dr. Alkhoury pioneered pediatric robotic surgery in South Florida.

Dr. Juan Calisto is a triple boarded certified pediatric surgeon within the Department of Pediatric Surgery at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. He holds boards in Pediatric Surgery, General Surgery and Critical Care. He trained Pediatric surgery at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Calisto serves as the director of the Colorectal Center the first only dedicated pediatric colorectal center in the state of Florida.
Doctor Calisto is a world expert in pediatric colorectal surgery, thoracic surgery and robotic surgery.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Calisto is an active researcher and educator. He is involved in the teaching of medical students, residents, fellows, and medical house staff. He has presented his research and taught at many national and international conferences. He developed since 2014 a program to train surgeons from developing countries. In addition, he is teaching faculty of minimally invasive thoracic and abdominal surgery for the International Pediatric Endosurgery Group.

Shahab Shaffiey, MD, MSc, is a pediatric surgeon on the medical staff at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Shaffiey obtained his medical degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City where he graduated manga cum laude with membership in the AOA medical honor society. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh.
During his post-doctoral research fellowship, he worked in collaboration with Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and McGowan Institute of Regenerative Medicine to help create a tissue-engineered intestine for children affected with short gut syndrome. His research lead to a first author publication in Tissue Engineering, national awards from the American Pediatric Surgery Association and Academic Surgical Congress, and invited lectureship at international surgical conferences.
He furthered his education by obtaining a master’s degree in clinical research through the prestigious Clinical and Translational Science Institute at the University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Shaffiey completed his fellowship in pediatric surgery at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. His training included learning from leaders in complex surgical oncology, colorectal surgery, inflammatory bowel disease, and trauma. While in fellowship he helped create quality improvement projects for patients in the neonatal intensive care unit and on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
Dr. Shaffiey serves on the hospital’s cancer committee. His clinical interests include complex surgical oncology, minimally invasive surgery and quality improvement and outcomes research.

Dr. Felipe Pedroso is a pediatric surgeon with the Department of Pediatric Surgery at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. He attended medical school at Georgetown University School of Medicine. His initial medical training began in general pediatrics where he completed an internship at the Weill-Cornell Medical Center-New York Presbyterian Hospital. However, at the end of his internship he decided to change paths and pursue pediatric surgical training.
Following his pediatrics internship he spent two years as a basic science and clinical outcomes researcher in pediatric surgery. He then completed his general surgery residency at Columbia University Medical Center-New York Presbyterian Hospital.
During his training he obtained a Master’s in Public Health with a focus in Biostatistics at the T.H. Chan Harvard School of Public Health. He completed his Fellowship in Pediatric Surgery at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital, Bloomberg Children’s Center in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Pedroso has returned home to Miami Florida, where his family is from, to practice pediatric surgery.
Dr. Pedroso’s clinical interests include general pediatric surgery, surgical oncology and thoracic surgery. His clinical focus is extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy in children and the management of pediatric trauma patients.

Dr. Patricio Lau is a pediatric surgeon in the Division of Pediatric and Thoracic Surgery at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Lau attended medical school at Herbert Wertheim FIU College of Medicine and was part of its inaugural class. He then pursued training in general surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. During his post-doctoral research fellowship, he joined a transitional science laboratory at Texas Children’s Hospital. During this time, he researched congenital diaphragmatic hernias, necrotizing enterocolitis and many other congenital anomalies. Dr. Lau presented his work at multiple national and international conferences that led to awards from the American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Surgeons and Canadian Association of Pediatric Surgeons.
After completing his surgical residency, Dr Lau returned home to Miami and continued training in Pediatric surgery at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital where he gained experience in neonatal, thoracic, oncological and robotic pediatric surgery.
Dr. Lau’s clinical interests include general pediatric surgery, surgical oncology, thoracic and robotic surgery. He currently serves as Co-Director of Trauma Services at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Miguel “Mike” B. Fernandez Family Pediatric Trauma Center.
Dr. Lau is bilingual in English and Spanish.
